OCEAN MEETS SHIRO

OCEAN -  How old are you? Where are you from?

SHIRO -  I just turned 28 in January and I'm originally from the Bay area. I lived in a town called Bay Point about 20 min south of Oakland off of Port Chicago Highway. My neighborhood was not that great of a place to live but it was my home. I ended up moving to Arizona in high school.

OCEAN - When did you start making music? Did you always want to make music?

SHIRO - I actually wanted to be an astronaut but strayed away from schooling as I got older because I fell in love with the arts. But I've been writing music since I was about 11 or 12.  Started rapping around 15/16 and started recording when I was 16/17. I started with just singing R&B and Soul type music. I ended up learning how to play the keyboard and eventually learned to produce my own beats.

OCEAN - You started rapping around the same age you moved. Was that because you met new people in Arizona that influenced you?

SHIRO - I didn't really have any family or friends out here in Arizona. I was really shy and kept to myself, staying inside of my own shell, so I think music was an escape. I ended up making friends with some people and it was funny cause non of us are from Arizona. I think we all ended up connecting because we didn't have anybody out here so it was a similarity we all shared. My friend Alex actually produces for me under the name Army Zenn.

OCEAN - Besides your friends, who are some artists that inspired you to create?

SHIRO - First of all, my uncle started a band in LA called Burning Star and he ended up working with Will.I.Am for a bit. My favorite singer of all time is Michael Jackson. I'm low key a super fan...not even low key actually hahaha. I also like Usher's earlier albums, everything between "My Way" and "Confessions". I like R Kelly, Avant, John Legend and many more. New artists like Frank Ocean and The Weekend are FIRE in my opinion and I have an addiction to female singers too. Aaliyah, Laurny Hill, Alicia Keys, Eryka Badu, TLC and my new favorite SZA are just a few that I really enjoy.

OCEAN -  Earlier you said "strayed away from school" tell me more about that.

SHIRO - All of my idols at the time didn't go to school to get where they are in life. When I graduated from high school I was already making music and writing comics and I didn't have the drive to be a student for 4-6 years. I dropped out of Central Arizona College in my second year. I was in an associates program for fine arts to go towards astronomy for my bachelors but that didn't last long as the only class I payed attention to was an animation class I was in so my grades started dropping. I was still living with my parents at the time and they didn't take kindly to the choices I was making and kicked me out.

OCEAN - Damn, were you homeless?

SHIRO - In a way yes. I slept on my girls couch for a while in her small apartment with her roommate. We eventually got our own place but I wasn't quite ready to be on my own. I didn't know anything about credit and I didn't have the best job. I was young and dumb and even got arrested because I was driving on a suspended license. I was going through hard times back then.

OCEAN - Are times still hard?

SHIRO - At the moment, yes. I'm jumping from place to place and recently got a new job after losing one. I'm moving to Cali in august with two of my friends, one being a producer. I want to switch scenes because there isn't much here in Arizona.

OCEAN - Last few questions. You write comics?

SHIRO -  Yes! I was always a nerdy kid growing up. I would spend more time drawing on my tests at school then actually taking the test. I've always been extremely interested in anime style art and manga. I actually released a few comics back in the day using Myspace, shout out Tom hahaha jk. I started getting serious with my music so I fell off writing comics for a while but now I'm working on something new to help push my brand which will correlate with my music as well as being able to stand on its own. I've got this R&B EP called "Anime Bullock that I'm going to release soon but I'm currently working on a bigger full project that is already a year and a half in the making.

OCEAN - What are some of your favorite and least favorite annimes and why?

SHIRO - I don't really hate any anime but my least favorite is probaby Inuyasha but only because it seemed like it was on adult swim all the time. My top three favorites are Dragon Ball Z, Naurato, and My Hero Academia. I like the triumphant story about a kid who had nothing or was looked down upon then became great despite what others thought.

THIS WAS AN AWESOME INTERVIEW AND AT TIMES STRAYED AWAY FROM THE MUSIC AS SHIRO'S BACK STORY IS ONE OF STRUGGLE. sHIRO HAS a UNIQUE VOICE WITH INTELLIGENT PUNCHLINES THAT GIVE JUSTICE TO HIS PASSION FOR MUSIC AND A MIDDLE FINGER TO THOSE THAT DON'T BELIEVE IN HIM. WITH california and a new tape/comic in the horizon, we don't think shiro's hard times will last for long.

MUCH LOVE AND GOOD VIBES TO EVERYONE WHO READ THIS
