His biggest fear is getting the back of his ankle cut open, a la House of Wax and his favorite movie is Goodfellas. He was a rebellious child, who once crashed a snowmobile through a garage and is super proud of his coffee making skills. Basically, Dustin (known as Grifter)  is a regular dude just following his passion which he encourages everyone to do.

“To anybody that’s thinking of getting into something but haven’t yet, just go for it. That’s what I did and now I’m dropping a finished product that I’m proud of. It’s a cool feeling, regardless of who you are.”

In a musical community where team work, getting dirty and mutual support from fans and artists create a superior sense of connectivity, Grifter, 22 of Saint-Paul, is thriving. Having grown up influenced by Tool and The Gorillaz, he explained his eccentric view on art and how he brings that into his music. His most recent drop, Heading to Hayward, was a look into his experimentation with music. Pairing gloomy, dark, almost lustful beats with airy, dreamy, 80s era pop accents, he delivers a beat tape full of exploration, reminiscent of a local talent of his that has created huge waves in the music scene, Corbin.

“I’d love to get Corbin on one of my beats, kid is way talented!”, Grifter states in response to who his dream collaboration would be with. When it comes to his creative process, he likes to keep it simple.

“I  chill and listen to music or read until I’m focused. Then I typically build the drums based off the mood I’m going for and I go from there.”

Having a lifelong interest in arts, Grifter shares his passion for photography with us.

“I’ve always been into visual arts”

He also shares with us a passion for skateboarding, amongst other things he likes about himself.

“I spent three years perfecting my kickflip”, he added.

His view on life is as simplistic and beautiful as his melodies. He encourages us to live in the moment. “Just worry about now”, he explains.

In a year’s time, he sees himself making beats with his friends. “That’s my dream life”. A powerful combination of talent, passion and a down to earth aura that bleeds into his music, Grifter is slowly but surely making working towards the path of stardom.
